Architectural design is such a unique quality. Most people think of things like form, function, and curb appeal, but there is really so much more to it. Architectural metal art is nothing new, but it’s certainly gaining traction, particularly in areas like municipalities or controversial spaces. This concept is a powerful medium that blends both utility and artistry. The concepts will transform a space that is otherwise ordinary.
The goal behind such structures is to create meaningful, aesthetic, and site-specific installations that create a whole new opinion of the site. Whether you’re working with an industrial facility, a public space, or even a residential community, these solutions have the ability to redefine how people experience the space. Learn more below.
What is Architectural Metal Art?
At MFR Corp, architectural metal art combines fencing or architectural design concepts with metal art and structure. We create structures that offer the strength and security a site might need, while also providing the visual impact that will truly draw appeal to the space. Architectural metal art can be in a fence, which is one of our specialty areas, but it can also take form in sculptural screens, facades, railings, structural accents, and other elements that might elevate the environment of the space.
Generic construction materials simply won’t cut it here. Instead, you’re looking for custom-designed details that highlight a specific theme, history, landscape, cultural identity, or something else entirely. No matter the end goal, the concept uses advanced metal fabrication techniques, often paired with finishes or coatings to create a design that maintains the integrity and safety of the area.
The result is something stunning, protective, and conducive to the needs of the space.
The Power of Transformation: From Function to Feature
At MFR Manufacturing, we create artful pieces designed to contribute to your space needs. Everything we do is fully customized to your needs. Below, we share how metal art can be transformative. Be sure to look for our concepts of where these have been deployed in recent projects as well.
Turn Utility into Art
Architectural metal art will turn something that is primarily used for utility purposes into art. This is a truly remarkable benefit. Those components that are typically purely functional become both functional and aesthetic. You see, a security fence or fence structure doesn’t just have to be stark and uninviting. It can be a canvas that enhances the space and tells a story.
Metalco has been at the forefront of this concept, long before it was a popular approach. We collaborate with architects, engineers, and designers to create customized metal systems that serve a practice and aesthetic purpose. It’s a dual functionality that can be particularly important in some spaces.
Reflect Local Culture and Landscape
Custom metal designs can provide a grounding space for modern architecture. Consider a space that is making changes that might be controversial. Or maybe the local environment and cultural context really need to come together.
We recently handled a project for the Lanesboro Wastewater Treatment Plant in Minnesota. There were some concerns in the community about the plant negatively impacting land value. The plant could have just shrugged off those feelings, but instead, they decided to embrace an artful solution.
When the treatment plant came to us, the idea was to include the rich history of the area and maintain their “small-town USA” look. Our designer created a system that incorporated weathered steel for a natural and aged look. Everything was custom designed and worked well to create the desired effects for the area.
Blending Infrastructure with Nature
Another recent project was the Honolulu Skyline Rail Station. Here, the design needed to fit the state-of-the-art modernity that the new elevated rail transit system provided to the area. The rail station is a self-driving train with cutting-edge technology, and our design needed to reflect the infrastructure.
We created a concept that mimicked a natural environment while also being highly modern. The Makalapa Station near Pearl Harbor got a customized solution with tri-color green shades that indulge in a satin finish. The idea was to blend with nearby greenery while hosting a modern visual. The fence incorporated radiused elements, asymmetrical shapes, and varied picket dimensions.
Customization in Architectural Metal Art
One of the core advantages of metal art like this is the custom fabrication capabilities. No two projects are ever the same because the details are created uniquely for that site and the visual or functional needs of the space. Collaboration with architects, planners, developers, and other professionals help to bring a unique vision for the space.
Custom elements might include details like these:
- Unique patterns and designs
- Curves and radius designs
- Mixed materials or textures
- Custom colors and finishes
- Integrated lighting, signage, or logos
- Historic or thematic motifs
Metal is highly versatile and therefore capable of creating a beautiful story that meets your location needs. The design brings meaning, but it brings so much more than that. In addition, these pieces are artful, but they are also strong and sturdy. The value is so much more than just visual. You’ve got a durable solution that will withstand heavy use, high traffic, and the weather. It’s low-maintenance, backed by our guarantees. The concepts can increase public engagement thanks to a visually interesting structure, but they also help to build an identity for your space that can mark landmarks, honor structures, reinforce brand, engage civic pride, and so much more.
