How Can You Upgrade An Existing Perimeter Security Fence?

Security needs rarely remain unchanged for the lifespan of a facility. A site may add equipment, expand its operations, introduce new access points, or face threats that were not considered when the original barrier was installed. Upgrading an existing perimeter security fence can strengthen vulnerable areas without requiring every component to be replaced. The right approach begins with a detailed assessment of the current system, followed by improvements tailored to the facility’s risks, operations, and appearance.

First, a Site and Security Assessment

Before selecting new materials, determine where the existing system falls short. A complete assessment should examine the fence line, gates, posts, hardware, terrain, adjacent structures, and surrounding activity.

Look for visible concerns such as:

  • Bent, loose, or corroded panels
  • Openings beneath the fence
  • Damaged or unstable posts
  • Easily removed fasteners
  • Oversized openings that create handholds or footholds
  • Obstructions that reduce visibility
  • Gates that do not close or align properly
  • Landscaping, equipment, or structures that assist climbing
  • Unsecured transitions between different barriers

The assessment should also consider how the property is currently used. A warehouse, utility facility, airport, correctional institution, and corporate campus will not share identical risks. Define which assets need protection, how people and vehicles enter the property, and where unauthorized access is most likely to occur.

Applicable codes, industry standards, and agency requirements should be reviewed during this stage. A system designed for general property control may not meet the performance expectations of a critical infrastructure site.

Strengthen Your Perimeter Security Fence with Welded Steel Panels

One of the most significant upgrades is replacing vulnerable sections with welded steel fence panels. Traditional chain link can sag, unravel, or be cut with commonly available tools. Welded construction provides greater rigidity and creates a more substantial physical barrier.

Our Metalco fence systems provide several options for different security and architectural goals:

  • Securite: This anti-climb system uses tightly spaced welded wire mesh designed to eliminate useful handholds and footholds. It is appropriate for high-security applications where deterring climbing and tampering is a priority.
  • Twinbar: Double horizontal wires sandwich the vertical wires to create an exceptionally rigid welded steel panel. It balances security, longevity, and a clean architectural appearance.
  • Grigliato: Electro-forged welded steel panels are available in multiple mesh configurations, allowing security, rigidity, visibility, and design requirements to be addressed together.
  • Amego: Integrated horizontal V-bends add rigidity while maintaining a minimal, unobtrusive appearance. It can provide a more secure and attractive alternative to chain link for many applications.

Not every section must necessarily use the same panel configuration. A facility may need its strongest anti-climb protection around critical assets while using an architectural welded wire system in public-facing areas. Our team can help develop a coordinated solution that avoids creating weak transitions between systems.

Improve Gates and Access Points

Gates are often among the most frequently used and mechanically complex parts of a secure boundary. Even a strong fence loses effectiveness when a gate is poorly aligned, left open, or fitted with inadequate hardware.

An upgrade may involve replacing an outdated entrance with a swing gate, cantilever slide gate, V-track roller gate, or specialty gate. We offer standard and custom sizes, along with designs that can coordinate with our fence systems.

Evaluate every access point for:

  • Opening width and available operating space
  • Vehicle and pedestrian traffic
  • Emergency access requirements
  • Ground slope and drainage
  • Closing and locking reliability
  • Potential gaps around or beneath the gate
  • Interaction with security personnel and technology

We equip our gate systems with hydraulic-powered operators and control options such as keypads and transmitters. The selected operator and controls should reflect traffic volume, authorization procedures, site conditions, and the facility’s broader access-control plan.

Pedestrian access will also need your attention. Separate vehicle and pedestrian movement where appropriate, and make sure each opening supports safe, controlled entry without creating an avoidable security gap.

Integrate Monitoring and Access-Control Technology

A physical barrier delays and discourages intrusion, while electronic systems help personnel detect and respond to activity. You may upgrade existing fencing to work with surveillance cameras, intrusion-detection sensors, controlled gates, and other perimeter-monitoring technology.

Before adding equipment, confirm that the fence layout supports clear camera views and appropriate sensor placement. Vegetation, signs, stored materials, and poorly located structures can create blind spots. Wiring routes and equipment mounting details should also be planned carefully so technology does not introduce climb points or compromise the steel panels.

Technology should reinforce the physical system rather than compensate for damaged materials or uncontrolled openings. Repair structural weaknesses first, then coordinate monitoring and access controls with the completed layout.

Address Corrosion and Long-Term Durability

Surface condition affects both the appearance and service life of a fence. Rust, peeling coatings, and exposed steel may indicate that you should consider localized repairs or broader replacement.

MFR Manufacturing’s welded steel systems use protective finishing processes appropriate to the selected product. Options include hot-dip galvanizing and durable polyester powder coating. These finishes help protect steel from corrosion and environmental exposure while providing a consistent architectural appearance.

We also offer a wide selection of colors, allowing an upgraded system to complement surrounding buildings, branding, or landscape design. Selecting durable materials and finishes at the beginning can reduce future maintenance interruptions and premature replacement.

Plan the Upgrade in Practical Phases

Budget constraints or operational schedules may make a phased project more practical than completing every improvement at once. Prioritize damaged sections, uncontrolled entrances, and areas protecting the most critical assets.

A phased plan might proceed by:

  1. Repairing immediate structural failures
  2. Securing gates and active access points
  3. Replacing climbable or easily breached fence sections
  4. Improving visibility and eliminating nearby climbing aids
  5. Integrating monitoring and access-control technology
  6. Updating lower-risk sections for consistency and durability

Each phase should support the final design. Installing incompatible temporary components can create extra costs when later work begins.

Upgrade Security with a Coordinated System

MFR Corp offers modular fence systems, standard configurations, CAD drawings, custom gate designs, and custom metal fabrication. Our experienced engineers and architects work with project teams to develop creative, economical solutions for specific site conditions. We design and manufacture our METALCO products in the United States, and we back our fence systems by a 20-year warranty.

An effective upgrade must address more than damaged panels. Gates, fasteners, finishes, visibility, access procedures, and monitoring technology all influence how well a perimeter security fence performs. We can help you evaluate existing conditions and develop an American-made welded steel solution suited to your facility. Contact our team to discuss your project and request a custom quote.
